A little bit about me

I grew up in Carver County with my three brothers and parents. My father built homes and my mother worked full time as a Realtor. Back then Carver county was mostly farms and small towns. My love of nature was nurtured during this time and stays with me to this day.

During the summer before my senior year, I and a small group spent a month in Panama working with translators. We organized their library and made repairs to their home. We spent a week in a rain forest with the Teribe tribe. My job was to put turpentine on the termite trails along the posts of the translators hut!! Spending a month in Panama, at the age of 17, opened my eyes to the world. It also sparked my desire to travel and move on to new horizons.

Since then I have lived in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Seattle, briefly in Golden Valley and now the last 19 years in Columbia Heights with my husband. In Los Angeles and Seattle, I met people from all over the world. I learned early on not to assume anything about anyone, thus, allowing me to get to know some very interesting people. I love living in Columbia Heights because of its diverse and eclectic residents. It is my little Seattle!

I earned my bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from the University of Seattle. My Master’s degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Washington. When I returned to Minnesota I obtained a second degree in Education for my teaching license from St. Catherine University.

I have worked in social services, grocery business, mortgage business, education, and now I work for you as a city council member. During my downtime, I enjoy taking care of my urban farm which includes my chickens and honeybees. I have traveled with my husband to Peru, China, Germany, Alaska, England, and Italy. I also love to quilt, read, and watch movies.

I volunteer with the Beautification committee, planting and watering the flower pots at City Hall and Murzyn Hall. I am a member of HeightsNEXT. This past year was very busy with Dog Day afternoon, movie nights, Cheers for Beers, clean-up activities, and garden events. I am also a member of Columbia Heights Sister City.

I enjoy working on the Columbia Heights city council. I find the work challenging and very rewarding when I have a chance to help improve our quality of life. I enjoy attending the many events in our city. Watching all the good work that people do in our city energizes me to keep working hard for our small town–urban center that we are!
